This hike will lead you to the summit of the most popular mountain in the Cyclades complex: Mount Zeus!
Once you reach the summit, there are many things to be proud of! Not only will you be at the highest point in the Cyclades (1003 m / 3290 feet), but you will have hiked to the mountain's summit where Zeus, the Father and King of the Olympian Gods, was raised. That's why the mountain is named after Zeus (known as "Zas" in the local dialect of Naxos).
This enjoyable, moderately challenging hike starts from the small chapel of Agia Marina in the village of Danakos. The trail you will follow is the same path that people have used to reach the mountain's summit since ancient times. As you ascend, you'll come across the fascinating inscription from the 4th century BCE carved into a rock: "MOUNT OF ZEUS OF MILITOS." What does the inscription say? Come with us and learn how mythology intertwines with history!
You'll begin walking on a dirt path surrounded by the characteristic vegetation of the Cyclades. Higher up, the path gradually turns into a rocky limestone trail that will lead you to the rugged summit of mighty Zeus.
The boundless blue of the Aegean Sea will accompany you on your journey, and the view of the neighboring Cycladic islands is breathtaking. When you reach the summit, the 360-degree view is god-like: plains and lush slopes, small villages, and countless tiny whitewashed chapels (how many can you count?) as far as the eye can see.
Once you reach the summit, you'll spend some time taking photos and savoring delicious traditional treats. After enjoying all the beauty, you'll start your way back! At the end of your hike, you'll indulge in a tasty traditional picnic under the shade of the trees.
Hiking to the summit of Mount Zeus is always a remarkable experience. In fact, it's a hike you're unlikely to forget. Join us for this epic hike and discover the natural beauty of Naxos!
