Begin your hike in the scenic village of Kinidaros, perched above marble quarries that have shaped its history. While many villagers once worked as quarrymen, Kinidaros is celebrated for something entirely different: its vibrant musical tradition. Almost every local is a skilled musician, keeping the rich Cycladic folk music alive and thriving.
From Kinidaros, you'll follow a dirt trail offering distant views of the majestic marble quarries. The path gradually transitions into cobblestones, winding down to the river. Along the way, the mountains meet the deep blue of the Aegean and the lush greenery of the ravine below creates a striking contrast with the rugged landscape.
Upon reaching the riverbanks, the scenery transforms completely. The 18th-century double-arch stone bridge, known as the Mill of Hadji, stands sentinel over the area. Here, the air is cooler, shady spots abound and the riverside is alive with crabs, water turtles and abundant vegetation, including oleanders and plane trees. Abandoned watermills, lagoons, and small waterfalls add to the charm of this serene landscape.
The trail then takes you past the quiet country church of Agios Georgios in the fertile Lagada area and a majestic four-arch water mill. Surrounded by plane trees and reed beds, you'll continue to the 18th-century tower of the Pradouna Elders before entering the traditional farm settlement of Mesa Geitonia.
Finally, you'll arrive in Eggares, an old farming village nestled in a fertile plain. Here, you can visit one of Naxos' oldest olive mills, the recently renovated Eggares Olive Press, which has been pressing local olives since at least the late 1800s. The day concludes with a leisurely meal at one of the village's finest traditional tavernas before your transport returns you to your accommodations.
