A magnificent, medium difficulty hiking route; Sangri - Temple of Dimitra - Panagia in a Cave - Bazeos Tower - Sangri - Olive Tree
This route provides a great chance to visit some of the most important sights of Naxos in the best possible way by hiking.
The Temple of Demeter, located near Sangri village, built around 530 B.C. is considered one of the most well preserved buildings of the ancient world (one of few in Greece) holding more than 50% of its original building material.
The Bazeos Tower, a 17th-century castle that acted as a monastery of True Cross is now fully renovated and a well-known monument open to the public hosting a number of cultural activities every summer.
The Oldest Olive Tree ("Gerontoelia" in greek) is considered to be the most ancient olive tree in the world with a calculated age between 5.000-6.000 years old.
This hiking tour is split into two parts;
1.The short route that starts from Sangri with intermediate stops at the church of Saint Nikolaos, the temple of Demeter and the Olive Tree.
2.The complete route continues to the church of "Panagia in a Cave", Bazeos tower and returns at Sangri village.
