    Highlights

    • One of the best spots to enjoy the sunset from an alternative perspective below the 'Portara'
    • Kayaking around Temple of Apollo with the guidance of an experienced, qualified kayak guide

    Description

The Temple of Apollo, known as 'Portara', is situated on the iconic Palatia islet and is the most recognizable landmark of Naxos. This massive marble gateway is the sole surviving element of an unfinished temple dedicated to Apollo, dating back to 530 BC.

Located at the entrance of Naxos ferry harbor, the Portara consists of four marble blocks, each weighing approximately 20 tons. Its construction was commissioned by the tyrant Lygdamis in the 6th century BC, inspired by the architectural style of the Temple of Olympian Zeus in Athens and the Temple of Hera in Samos. Measuring 59 meters in length and 28 meters in width, the temple had an unusual feature for Ionian architecture - its entrance faced west, towards Naxos. Today, the grand marble gateway that once led from the vestibule to the temple's main chamber stands among the remnants of its foundation and an incomplete colonnade.

The islet of Palatia is also linked to the myth of Ariadne, the Cretan princess, and Dionysus, the god of wine and revelry. According to legend, Dionysus abducted Ariadne on this very shore, making Palatia the birthplace of the Dionysian festivities. Today, Portara is accessible via a paved footpath, offering visitors one of the most mesmerizing sunset views in Greece.

Experience Naxos from a unique perspective with this sea kayaking tour during the sunset in a small group. Meet your expert guide at Ai Giannides beach near Naxos towv (Hora), where you will get familiar with your kayak and equipment before setting off. Paddle around the scenic peninsula, taking in breathtaking coastal views as the sun begins to set. Along the way, you will have time for a swim and a snack break, while your guide captures your adventure with an underwater camera.
