Souda Bay is a naturally stunning and strategically significant harbor, renowned for its picturesque beauty and protection over the centuries. The vessel, the "GRAMVOUSA EXPRESS," embarks nearly daily from May to October, departing at 10:30 from Souda's main port and returning at 16:00.
Navigating the tranquil azure waters, accompanied by soothing melodies, the boat sails past Souda Islet, a sentinel at the harbor entrance, and Leon Islet, a small, nearly circular landmass nearby. Souda Islet hosts Fortezza, a Venetian fortress erected in 1571 AD, once the sole bastion safeguarding the port entrance and Chania city for ages. Heading northwest, the boat cruises along the rugged cliffs of Akrotiri peninsula, unveiling picturesque spots like Marathi Beach, where a 45 minute voyage concludes. Marathi's sandy shores, shallow waters, and wind protection make it an idyllic retreat for families. Passengers can opt to remain onboard for relaxation, nearby swimming, and lunch, or disembark for beach activities before returning to dine onboard.
The onboard Self-Service Bar offers delectable meals, including vegetarian options, complemented by individual salads and bottled water. Departing Marathi at 12:45, the boat skirts Pervolitsa, offering glimpses of agile wild goats amid the rocky terrain. Continuing southeast, Cape Drepano comes into view, potentially allowing for an up close view of its historic stone lighthouse, dating back to 1864, weather permitting. Cape Drepano also hosts the renowned Elephant Cave, discovered in 1999, housing ancient elephant remains and serving as a refuge for the Mediterranean monk seal, Monachus monachus.
En route, sea caves dot the coastline, offering another spectacle of nature's marvels. The boat anchors near one of the sheltered beaches (weather permitting), inviting passengers for a refreshing swim in the azure waters. Homeward bound, passengers marvel at the towering peaks of the Apokoronas peninsula, with sights including the ancient city of Aptera and the historic Turkish Izzeddin Fortress atop Kamami Hill, dating back to 1870. Brimming with captivating memories, passengers return to Souda port around 16:00, enriched by this enchanting maritime odyssey.
